Cyber Essentials – The What’s, the How’s and the Why’s
Over the last few years, we have shifted towards an ever more cyber dominated world and way of working. This become amplified with the pandemic, forcing many of us to essentially move our offices online.
With more people operating online, this means the ability for more criminal activity. We have seen in recent years this being backed up by the stats. In the long term, we have seen over a 12 per cent increase in cybercrime since 2015. Looking at more recent stats, 84% of EMEA businesses have noticed a rise in cybercrime over the past year. The increase in crime has also been partnered with an 85% increase in computer misuse. Therefore, it could be argued that as we become ever more dependant on the cyber world, we are forced to expose ourselves to higher levels of risk. But what if that didn’t have to be the case?
Would you leave your house without phone, keys, wallet or purse? Call them your daily essentials.
Would Bear Grylls go into the wilderness without a knife, flint and compass? Call them the survival essentials.
Would you open the store without a cash float, staff and products? Call them your store-front essentials.
The answer to all is NO (maybe other than Bear Grylls…seriously that guy is from another planet!). It’s pretty clear to see as human nature we don’t operate in spaces without the essentials needed. Why then, do so many companies and people feel comfortable operating in cyber-space without all the essentials? We could only come up with one answer. Maybe…people just aren’t aware of what actually is essential and what is best practices!?
