Error: “Word experienced an error trying to open the file”
Today we will be discussing how to fix the Office 2010 error “word experienced an error trying to open the file.”
When trying to Access Word Documents on the network, you might sometimes might get an error saying “Word experienced an error trying to open the file.”
This fix will only apply if you are trying to open a word document stored on the network i.e. if you get the error when trying to open a document from a shared drive. However, I would recommend going to the Trust Center (will give a step by step guide how to get there below) and seeing if there is any setting there that can be altered to fix your issue. Before doing this makes sure that you have the correct permissions to access the file/s first.
To get to the Trust center you have to go to:
File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
From here you’ll have a number of Options on the left hand side of the panel. Click on the “Trusted Locations” tab on the left hand side.
Inside the trusted locations tab you can choose which locations you trust to open files from. This can either be setup on setup to trust specific locations on your local computer or trust location on the network (such as a shared drive). To do this click on:
“Add new location….”
Once the tab is open click on browse, find the location of the file you are trying to open and click OK. If you want to access sub folders within that folder then tick “Sub folders of this location are also trusted“.
Once you’ve done this click OK on the open tabs and try and access the file that you are getting the error on.
