How to Factory Reset Your Windows 10 and 11 Device

How to Factory Reset Your Windows 10 and 11 Device

Whether you’re a business owner planning to sell a computer, an employee facing persistent performance issues, or simply want a fresh start, factory resetting your Windows 10 11 device is a vital skill to have. This process will return your PC to its original state, wiping your personal files and installed applications, leaving it as good as new.

    Before You Begin

Before resetting your PC, ensure you’ve backed up all your important data. Resetting your device will delete all your personal files, apps, and settings. Consider using an external storage device or a cloud storage service like OneDrive or Google Drive to save your data.

If you are doing a factory reset of your laptop due to a virus then be careful of the fact that the virus may be attached to your backed up documents and settings so make sure that you scan and destroy the virus before you restore your settings.

    Resetting a Windows 10 Device

    1. Open Settings: Click the Start button, then select the gear-like symbol to open your system’s settings.
    2. Navigate to Recovery Options: Within Settings, select ‘Update & Security’, and then choose ‘Recovery’ from the left-hand menu.
    3. Start Reset: Under the ‘Reset this PC’ section, click ‘Get started.’
    4. Choose an Option: You’ll be prompted to either ‘Keep my files’ or ‘Remove everything.’ If you want a full reset, select ‘Remove everything.’ This option will remove all your personal files, apps, and settings.
    5. Reset: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset process. Your PC will restart, and the process may take some time.

    Resetting a Windows 11 Device

The steps to reset a Windows 11 device are similar:

    1. Open Settings: Right-click the Start button and choose ‘Settings.’
    2. Navigate to Recovery Options: Within Settings, select ‘System’, then ‘Recovery’ from the left-hand menu.
    3. Start Reset: Under the ‘Reset this PC’ section, click ‘Reset PC.’
    4. Choose an Option: You’ll be asked to ‘Keep my files’ or ‘Remove everything.’ For a full factory reset, select ‘Remove everything.’
    5. Reset: Continue to follow the prompts to reset your PC. The process will initiate upon restart and may take some time.

Remember, a factory reset is a significant operation and should only be a last resort when troubleshooting, or if you’re planning to dispose of, sell, or repurpose your computer. Always ensure to backup your essential data before proceeding. With these steps, you can successfully and safely reset your Windows 10 or 11 device to its factory settings.
